Welsh quilts are striking, with bold colours and simple shapes. They look magnificent as bed quilts but are also distinctive when scaled down to cradle size or smaller. Welsh quilts are intensively hand quilted with their traditional motifs, so making a little quilt is a great way for a beginner to start on a Welsh quilting journey.

Little Welsh Quilts: Made the traditional way, is an ebook with video demonstrations by the author Mary Jenkins, presenting six delightful quilts to make. They vary in style and complexity but are all based on original full-sized square or rectangular Welsh wool quilts. If not actually used for a doll or cot quilt they make delightful decorations for the home, either as wall hangings or cushions, giving any home the Welsh country look. As they are so small they can be made from a few fat quarters but any precious scraps can be added in too. Together with the stitcher’s choice of colours, the distinctive quilting motifs will give these little quilts their authentic Welsh identity. Also included is plenty of Mary Jenkins’ expert advice on the techniques she uses to design and create her Welsh quilts.

Mary Jenkins is surely going to have everyone making Welsh quilts, the traditional way, with this ebook on disk. Pop the disk into your computer and you can view the ebook page by page or click on the pages you want. There are six projects in all plus lots of information on fabric selection and putting fabrics together. Mary explains her techniques and way of working. The bonus with this ebook is that you can have Mary show you how to quilt just like she is in the room with you – just click on the videos. Excellent clear diagrams, good projects with interesting stitched motifs based on circles and spirals. These hand stitched quilts are small and fairly quick to make.- Karen Platt, http://www.yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts

This e-book (pdf format purchased on CD rom) from Rainbow Disks focuses on a more relaxed approach to quilting. Think sitting in front of the telly hand quilting whilst you unwind at the end of the day, working on a small quilt not worrying whether your quilting is perfectly symmetrical or not. Imagine using household objects around you to draw your quilting pattern onto the fabric, sounds like a hassle free relaxing way to quilt to me.

Little Welsh Quilts by Mary Jenkins. The book talks you through the basics of Welsh quilting and has embedded video clips showing you the basic techniques you will need. There’s a good section as the start on choosing fabrics too. You will then find 6 small quilt projects with detailed instructions on the cutting, piecing and quilting as well as printable templates.

I had the choice of downloading the book straight to my kindle or to my husband’s laptop and copying across. I chose to download straight to my kindle although I have since copied the file across to my husband’s laptop as a backup so that should something happen to my kindle I won’t lose it. It was very easy to do by simply navigating to the vivebooks website via the browser on my kindle and choosing the book I wanted. The checkout process is simple accepting all major credit/debit cards as well as paypal then once you have checked out you click on the download link and the download starts instantly. It took around 7 minutes for my book to download but that will vary depending on the size of the file and the speed of your internet connection.
There were lots of books to choose from but seen as I am Welsh I couldn’t resist the chance to learn a little more about my Welsh quilting heritage and chose this book.
It is a lovely book that gives lots of history of Welsh quilting, patterns to follow and how to videos and I can see myself making most if not all the quilts in this book at some point. It starts with an introduction to Welsh quilting techniques, fabric choices and popular Welsh quilting motifs. The how to videos cover everything from the basics of how to join two squares together to how to mark out the quilting designs and finishing techniques. There are lots of lovely techniques with detailed photographs and videos to make all the new techniques clear and easy to understand. She even thinks to include photos of the backs of the quilts so you can see the detailed quilting without the distraction of the fabric choices.
The book also includes easy to print instructions, layout and assembly diagrams and templates. I can see me going back to this book time and time again.
