Create hand or machine appliqué with ‘Harris Tweed’ – in easy steps!

Chris Hammacott leads you through plump cushions, quirky tea cosies, a table runner and a wall-hanging, all given the rugged but cosy personality of ‘Harris Tweed’.

Designs are inspired by Chris’s croft life on the Isle of Lewis; and her sheep, chickens, cats and pugs. The Kindle cover has reverse appliqué sheep. A scarecrow with tweed hat decorates a denim jacket; three-dimensional flowers enhance a sweater.

Follow the guidelines and techniques, and watch the author demonstrating on the video clips. Whether you are a complete beginner or a more advanced student, Chris will convince you of the wonderful qualities of ‘Harris Tweed’ for appliqué.

    Review by Georgina Wade
It’s rare to see a book on patchwork and appliqué that has a British cloth at it’s heart. Of course to be specific it’s Scottish and my thanks go to the author and publisher for bringing us something completely different.

I can’t say I have ever thought of using Harris Tweed, so this book was a real eye opener for me and though it is aimed at the beginner in appliqué and as such leads one every step of the way with both videos and written instructions, it surely will inspire anyone with a love of fabric.

Harris Tweed is only made in the islands of the Outer Hebrides, where the author lives, and through words and pictures it is obvious that she has embraced both the island way of life and its fabric and created some charming projects using its cloth. It catches the spirit of the place with pictures of it’s rather wonderful bleakness. The cloth is certainly not bleak, it is colourful and hardwearing and anything made in it will be comfort personified. Each tempting project is explained in full with the author demonstrating her craft with videos, which will surely encourage any nervous machinist to have a go.

Review by Popular Patchwork magazine, November 2014

‘This is another fine example of what Vivebooks are great at, a winning combination of text and video, easy to read and watch, in a downloadable or CD format ebook.

Long time Popular Patchwork contributor Chris Hammacott trained as a weaver before she was a quilter, and her love of woven wool fabric in the particular form of Harris Tweed, has long been a mainstay of her designs. In recent years she moved to the Outer Hebrides and has taken further inspiration from this interesting fabric, producing Harris Tweed at home with her husband.

In her new ebook, Chris tackles all you need to know about Harris Tweed; its history, its unique properties and how to use it in your own work. Chris shows you how to appliqué tweed by hand or machine, by turning, raw edge and in reverse, and provides a lovely selection of projects for you to hone your new skills.

No prior knowledge is presumed – the instructions are fine for beginners, and the video tutorials amply demonstrate each new technique. More confident sewers can skip the videos, and follow the text, but will still learn a lot about how to use and care for this wonderful indigenous textile.’

I’ve read this book cover to cover. and I loved it. Although I have been doing applique for over 30 years, I have never worked with wool in this way. I learned a lot about how the tweed comes to be and about the history behind it, and I especially enjoyed the slices of life Chris serves up throughout the narrative. There are beautiful pictures of the Outer Hebrides and of Harris Tweeds themselves. The projects offered are lovely and the information gleaned from these pages is thoroughly satisfying. I highly recommend it as an adition to your quilting library.

This is a fantastic book for both beginners and experienced quilters. I have been quilting for 18 years and it has never occurred to me until now to use a wool tweed. What a fantastic fabric medium especially for home decor items. Chris Hammacott’s instructions are very easy to follow and understand and the embedded instructional videos in the ebook are very helpful.
